Thoughtfully Crafted Hospitality

The Property: Once an operational farmhouse and private home, the 1824 House still has some home-like character. The charm of the past is still evident in the guest rooms, but they now have heat, air conditioning and other modern amenities like private bathrooms, wi-fi and feather beds.  There is a communal refrigerator for guest use, a TV room and a lovely sitting room with a cozy glass-front wood stove. The 1824 House sits on more than 14 acres of undeveloped land, just a few miles from the village of Waitsfield. Guests are welcomed to swim in the swimming hole, relax on the lawn or enjoy the fabulous sledding hill at the back of the property.

The Innkeepers: Innkeepers and co-owners Matt and Emily Snodgrass, have been involved in the 1824 House since 2009. They live on the property with their chocolate labrador, Yara. Emily's veins pump service molecules instead of blood. She has a history of employment in the hospitality industry. She considers herself an artist, but works primarily in edible mediums; specifically butter, sugar and flour. Matt has a knack for fixing things, a PhD in Public Policy, a resume that includes employment in the energy sector and an interest in criminological research. After years of education, several 'high-pressure' jobs and a few cross-country moves, Matt and Emily chose Vermont and employment as innkeepers for the work/fun balance it offered. Together they enjoy many of the Mad River Valley's recreational opportunities, gardening and the occasional road trip.

The Owners: The Mendell family purchased the 1824 House in 2009, taking a place on the list of owners who have provided caring stewardship to the property since it was converted to a Bed and Breakfast over 25 years ago. We are real people, happy to share our home with you while you visit. We feel fortunate to live in such a beautiful place, and we will do everything we can to make you feel at comfortable while you're here.  Stay with us, or host an event in our beautifully restored barn. The 1824 House happily welcomes weddings, business meetings and private parties.
